Stone Matrix Asphalt has been used for over 20 years in partsof Europe and Scandinavia. Recently, it has gained more recognitionin the United States. The mixture has been successful due in partto its durability. This durability is provided by a mortar thatconsists of asphalt binder, fine aggregate, mineral filler, anda stabilizing additive.
This paper details research aimed at applying the Superpavebinder test methods and specifications to SMA mortars. It wasfound that the use of the Dynamic Shear and Bending Beam Rheometersdoes seem to be viable with mortars.
Data obtained with the Dynamic Shear and Bending Beam Rheometerssuggests that specifications for SMA mortars can be establishedif the current Superpave binder specifications related to thesetwo pieces of equipment are multiplied by a factor of 5.
