This paper reviews the research carried out on the hot-mix recyclingof bituminous materials over more than a decade in the UK. Resultsfrom trials on public roads and full-scale accelerated load testingof recycled roadbase in the TRL Pavement Test Facility are summarisedand discussed. Hot rolled asphalt wearing course has been recycledin-situ using the Remix method with up to 80 per cent of the originalsurfacing material in the mix. In off-site mixing plants, recycledbituminous roadbase has been produced with up to 60 per cent ofreclaimed material in the mix. Their performance in the road hasbeen assessed by measuring longitudinal profile, transient deflection, depth of rutting, surface texture and resistance to skidding.Performance-related laboratory tests have also been carried out.In general, the trials indicate that the performance of recycledmaterials is as good as that of equivalent conventional materials. The results of the research have been implemented in the UK Specifications.
