VEROAD is a linear visco-elastic multilayer program. The acronymVEROAD stands for Visco-Elastic Road Analysis Delft. The programtakes fully account for both the viso-elasticity of the asphaltmaterial and the movement of the wheel. Thus the actual time dependentdisplacements, stresses and strains and the permanent deformationare obtained, fully three-dimensionally. From these quantitiesothers can be derived: the dissipated energy due to the passageof a wheel, the effect of lateral wandering on permanent deformation, the principal stresses, the rotation of the principal stresses, etc.
The underlying theory is described shortly. The program hasbeen validated by comparing the longitudinal and transversal strainsmeasured in full scale tests with those calculated by using VEROAD.The agreement can be called excellent. The field of applicationis obvious. It ranges from analyzing full scale test results topavement design, from mix design to analysis of the damaging effectsof different wheel configurations. In the article also attentionis paid to the experimental determination of the material parametersto be used in VEROAD.
