Project Title

Evaluation of In-Place Recycling of Asphalt Concrete as Unbound Base Material Using Reliability Analysis

Abstract

(Key objectives, description of work, expected outcome)

This study evaluates the reliability and construction specifications of pavement rehabilitation using in-situ recycling of existing failed asphalt concrete and a portion of the aggregate base, placement and compaction of this material as a new granular layer, followed by an asphalt concrete overlay. Field and laboratory testing were conducted to evaluate the "pulverized" materials. Field tests included deflections measured using the heavy weight deflectometer test and dynamic cone penetrometer test.  Laboratory tests included sieve analysis, compaction test, and triaxial testing.

Based on field and laboratory test results, the reliability of the pulverized material will be compared with that of several virgin aggregate base materials in California. Finally, recommendations for the construction specification of gradation and compaction level of the pulverized material will be proposed.
